Mental Health Resources in Missouri

Last updated September 11, 2026

Missouri residents facing mental health challenges have access to a range of state and federally supported services, from crisis intervention available 24 hours a day to longer-term counseling and psychiatric care covered through Medicaid. Whether you are navigating anxiety, depression, serious mental illness, or a psychiatric emergency, knowing where to turn first can make an enormous difference. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and Missouri's 2-1-1 helpline are two of the fastest ways to get connected to the right support.

The Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH) oversees the state's public behavioral health system and funds a network of community mental health centers (CMHCs) across all 114 counties. These centers provide outpatient therapy, psychiatric medication management, case management, and crisis stabilization services, often on a sliding-fee scale for uninsured individuals. Medicaid (called MO HealthNet in Missouri) covers a broad range of mental health and substance use services for eligible low-income residents, including therapy, psychiatric visits, and crisis services.

If cost, insurance, or geography feels like a barrier, do not let that stop you from reaching out. Many programs accept clients regardless of ability to pay, and 2-1-1 Missouri can help you locate the closest appropriate service, including services in rural areas where access can be more limited. Veterans, older adults, and people experiencing homelessness have additional dedicated pathways described below.
