Mental Health Resources in New Jersey

Last updated September 10, 2026

New Jersey residents facing mental health challenges have access to a range of publicly funded services, from crisis intervention to ongoing outpatient care. The state's mental health system is overseen by the New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), a division of the New Jersey Department of Human Services, which funds and regulates community mental health centers, crisis services, and peer support programs throughout all 21 counties.

If you are in crisis right now, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which connects you to a trained counselor 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For non-emergency help finding local mental health providers, support groups, or sliding-scale counseling, call 2-1-1 — New Jersey's free, confidential helpline — or visit 211nj.org to search a database of local resources.

Cost is a common barrier, but many New Jersey residents qualify for NJ FamilyCare (the state's Medicaid program), which covers mental health and substance use treatment at little or no cost. Even without insurance, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) across the state offer mental health services on a sliding-fee scale based on your income. Your county's mental health board is also a key local entry point and can help connect you to the right level of care.
